Making people:
There is a book review Chris Manson Making People NATURE vol. 471 no. 7338 March 17, 2011 page 297 reviewing Philip Ball Unnatural: The Heretical Idea of Making People Bodley Head 2011) that explores the prejudice against advanced technology being used to produce people.
The big scare of course is cloning people, taking DNA from a person and making an identical twin. I guess just about everybody thinks that does not seem right. After all, if eugenics includes a bid to change the gene pool, cloning folks would do that a lot more.
For now it is science fiction, but the day may come when it is technologically feasible. I suppose we ought to have a policy in place before that. And if it turns out that it is not such a bad thing, policies can be changed.
A more immediately interesting technology is in vitro fertilization. A sperm and an egg from the hopeful couple are taken and the sperm is injected directly into the egg. About half the time it works and I understand that it has succeeded something like four million times over the thirty years that the technology has been available.
I do not think this will be the whole answer to the issue of rising infertility. When I look at the evidence there appear to be both pre-zygotic and post-zygotic components. In vitro fertilization obviously addresses only the pre-zygotic component.
On the other hand, while it may not be the whole answer, it may be part of the answer. I do not have a well worked out plan even if someone were to inquire. At this point all I am willing to say is we need more relevant research and less prejudice.
